Digital Technologies
Data Detectives
Can you solve the case of the missing birthdays?
Data Detectives is a digital technologies WebQuest resource designed for year 2 students. Data Detectives requires students to work through a series of individual and group learning experiences to solve the case of the missing birthdays. Data Detectives consists of 4 lessons each 60 minutes in length that will develop their knowledge and understanding on digital technologies and how it can be applied to real world problems.
Data Detectives provides students with an authentic learning experience as they develop their recognition of the readily available patterns and data that occurs naturally.

By the end of the unit students should be able to;
- digitally identify and explain the meaning of data
- collect class birthday data in a tally chart and create a table of information.
- recognise and explore patterns from the students birthday data
- create a digital picture graph of students birthdays
- create a digital bar graph of students birthdays
Data Detectives is based on the two following content descriptors and general capabilities from the Australian Curriculum v8.1.
Content Descriptors
Digital Technologies Knowledge and Understanding
- Recognise and explore patterns in data and represent data as pictures, symbols and diagrams (ACTDIK002)
- Collect, explore and sort data, and use digital systems to present the data creatively (ACTDIP003)
The following Australian Curriculum Mathematics Year 2 Content Descriptors can also be incorporated to deliver an integrated learning experience.
Data representation and interpretation
- Collect, check and classify data (ACMSP049)
- Create displays of data using lists, table and picture graphs and interpret them (ACMSP050)
Key Ideas
- Computational thinking: Students need to use their computational thinking to create two digital graphs by undertaking a series of steps through the Data Detectives WebQuest to logically order the data and recognise and explore the patterns.
General Capabilities
Literacy: Level 2
- Comprehending texts through listening, reading and viewing
- Word Knowledge
- Composing texts through speaking, writing and creating
- Text knowledge
- Visual Knowledge
Numeracy: Level 2
- Recognising and using patterns and relationships
- Interpreting statistical information
- Using spatial reasoning
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Capability: Level 2
- Investigating with ICT
- Creating with ICT
Critical and Creative Thinking
- Inquiring – identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas
- Generating ideas, possibilities and actions
- Reflecting on thinking and processes
Differentiation is incorporated through:
- written and visual videos of the steps needed for each lesson
- explicit instruction
- scaffolding
- constructivism
- Musical intelligence: videos with songs
- Visual - spatial intelligence: Detective mike videos and online games.
- Interpersonal: working independently through the steps
- Intrapersonal: working collaboratively to find out students birthdays and discuss results
- Logic: exploring and sorting through the data
- Word smart: listening to instructions
- Kinaesthetic: walking around to find out students birthdays.
Extension activities are included as a link at the end of each lesson to incorporate all students needs.
